International Trombone Association Features DUO BRUBECK in 10-Page Feature by Jazz Editor Dr. Peter Madsen

This is a tremendous honor, and I am humbled and grateful. There are a great number of fine trombonists whose projects and stories could have easily filled these pages.

While I had the opportunity to thank several guitarists and trombone teachers in the article, I would like to add that I am weak and He is strong. I am thankful to God for the opportunities he has given me. My parents and family are an amazing blessing and support in every way.

It has also brought to mind some of my big band leaders.

Some of my jazz band directors have really been on my mind: James Boitos at Illinois State University conducted the finest repertoire I have ever played in any big band, such as “The Things Are Coming” & “The Things Are Here” (Dizzy), and “The Shoes of The Fisherman’s Wife Are Some Jive-Ass Slippers” & “Don’t Be Afraid, The Clown’s Afraid, Too!”(Mingus) among others. He is a wonderful musician, teacher and man, whose improvisation class was centered around LISTENING to great albums and really turning on his students to jazz in all of its breadth and depth. Jim was the one who advised me to audition for Northwestern! He brought Dizzy to play with our band-WOW!

Bob Thommes was my first jazz band director and I was with him for six years in Junior High School and High School. He loves jazz more than any bassoonist I have ever met, and I was eventually able to forgive him for selecting to attend the University of Illinois, after all he was only 18 at the time!

Don Owens of Northwestern University is the finest teacher from the podium I have ever seen, and Whit Sidener was an under-appreciated master. Not everyone can conduct the finest young jazz musicians in the world, who are coming in and out of the Bands of Woody Herman, Buddy Rich, Paul Anka & Maynard Ferguson AND COMMAND THEIR RESPECT.

Thanks to the great Disney All-American Bands Bob Raddock, Rick Goodstein, Art Bartner & the amazing artists they brought in to play with our bands.

In Chicago, I played some for Mayo Tiana but in BEAUTIFUL MIAMI, I had a gig with The Melton Mustafa and Jesse Jones Jr. Big Band my first night in town, and spent many joyful years playing for them, Mike Lewis, Peter Graves and Larry Elgart. Not to mention the masterful mentorship of Miami Jazz Trumpet and Big Band Leader & Legend, John Georgini.

I was also privileged to play with many amazing student trombone sections at Illinois State University, Northwestern University, The University of Miami, Disney & Birch Creek Music Academy. I think that the best was at Illinois State University, with Bill Aurand, Paul Browne, Mark Cooper & Tom Browne. (Honorary-Dave Gross!)

Thanks to all!! Wanted to share this with you!!!

LOOK-We made the cover!! Really, Look again…..

Solo Bass Trombone Part, “Four Pieces for Bass Trombone and Woodwind Quintet” by Charles J. Campbell (CJC)

PROMISES KEPT!

Please enjoy this wonderful composition. We at davidbrubeck.com look forward to reading a dissertation some day on “The Compositions for Trombone of Charles J. Campbell”.

Sorry for the delay with the solo part-it should have been published first. Oh well, better late than never!

Memory fails us! We do not remember if either Todd Murphy, for whom the piece was written, or David Brubeck premiered this composition. It certainly looks practiced.

Notes for bass trombonists:

‘T’ is David Brubeck’s indication for F-Attachment alone

‘F’ is David brubeck’s indication for Gb-attachment alone

When these two symbols overlap, it indicates the activation of both ‘F’ and ‘Gb’ independent valves, resulting in ‘D’.

Dr. CHARLES CAMPBELL’S “Four Pieces for Solo Bass Trombone and Woodwind Quintet”, FREE Parts For Flute, Bassoon & French Horn

Three published world premiere recordings for bass trombone? Cool! All the parts, (free!), for a ground breaking trombone quartet featuring bass trombone PLUS a recording? Unbelievable! But wait, there is more….How about FREE music for a four movement bass trombone solo with Woodwind Quintet Accompaniment? As “The Great One” might have once said in Miami Beach….AND AWAY WE GO…..

In a certain sense, outside of jazz, there have been very few (if any), brass soloists who have risen to the level of the great piano, violin and cello soloists of classical music. An exception is Maurice Andre, and his successful recordings and appearances before major orchestras. While a handful or two of wonderful euphonium and tuba soloists have achieved similar result in front of wind ensembles, it is really Rolf Smedvig, of the Empire Brass, who made an alternate path as a brass soloist, this time accompanied by brass quintet. In this achievement, Smedvig is unsurpassed.

The path he made clear, was also embraced by Nelson Riddle’s Composition for George Roberts featuring bass trombone in a brass quintet setting.

Another guide stone are these works by Charles J. Campbell. The bass trombone is featured in three different chamber setting: a trombone quartet, in solo with woodwind quintet and in solo with string quartet.

While this piece was written with Todd Murphy in mind, and the other two with me in mind, the subtext is clear: Dave Taylor had elevated the world of the bass trombone soloist in classical music to a nearly unprecedented level. Perhaps he would even consider these…

www.davidbrubeck.com is pleased to present the flute, French horn and bassoon parts for this work. More to come! As we prepare the oboe, clarinet and solo bass trombone parts as well. It is unknown if this work has yet to be premiered. Please contact me if you are interested in doing so.

Enjoy!!!

Sly & The Family Stone, and more Questions.

Sly & The Family Stone represent the apex of Funk bands featuring horn sections. Psychedelic Californians who possessed a flair for fashion and had a clear idea that music could make the world a better place, did just that! Other hallmarks of the band include great songwriting, multiple talented vocalists and the amazing leadership of Sly. Bassist Larry Graham invented the slap bass technique, now standard in many styles of music, most particularly funk. What a message! What a band! One can hear their influence on Stevie Wonder, Prince and even no less than the great Miles Davis!
