Brass Miami Quartet “Lascia ch’io pianga” by George Frederic Handel

David Brubeck, bass trombone

Domingo Pagliuca, tenor trombone

Jose Sibaja, trumpet

Brian Neal, solo trumpet

A boy from North Germany for whom a loving mother snuck a harpsichord into the attic. The man whom learnt his Operatic trade in Italy amongst admirers who called him “The Bohemian” returned to Europe and her most prominent satellite to write Operas more! All the while inventing the Organ Concerto and defining the Oratorio for all time with his masterpiece “The Messiah” and it’s iconic “Hallelujah Chorus”.

Handel is at once alluringly melodic while intensely and rhythmically intricate. It was Handel’s portrait that hung above the bed of a young Ludvig van Beethoven and to which the youthful virtuoso would awaken inspired, invigorated and challenged.

At his operatic best, Handel’s “Lascia ch’io pianga” has been sung by many the greatest vocalists that succeeded it, and a played by more than a few succeeding instrumentalists, as well. Here, the delightful turns pf phrase and depths of expression are balanced with the restraint of delicacy by our very own Brian Neal. Enjoy!

“Bluesette” & “Triste”

“Bluesette”

“Triste”

Apparently there is an appetite for Jazz Trio with Bass Trombone!!! Especially with Piano & Guitar…

YOU HAVE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE! (maybe the only place…you know what I mean….)

A few more tunes from the night my friend came to visit the gig…

For Tenor Trombone, it seems easy to think of a few very successful small groups-J & K!, J. J. Johnson Quartet, Frank Rosolino Quartet, Al Grey and others…

Bass Trombone alone with a trio or quartet is harder to recall. George Roberts, “Bottoms Up”! Some of the bass bone tradition is to just play the melody like a great singer-hopefully! This comes from George!

Bass trombone seems most successful with quintet alongside tenor trombone, a la J & 8VB K! Think Raul de Souza with Frank Rosolino, Daye Taylor with Jim Pugh, Bill Reichenbach with Mike Davis, with Wayne Coniglio & Scott Whitfield…

Pat Zielinski and I agree the best setting for Bass Trombone in jazz trio is with piano and guitar. Add bass, and you have too much bass! Hard to find masters like these who can comp well together. Sometimes it is best just to stay out of the way!

Thank you for coming along for the adventure as I post these online for loved ones with no other access.

I’m Old Fashioned-Trio Piano, Guitar & Bass Trombone

Probably Tenor Sax, Alto Sax, Trumpet, Trombone (Tenor), Flute, Clarinet, Violin, Soprano Saxophone or Bari Sax would front a trio or quartet before a Bass Trombone. (Outside a recording project…) BUT what a blast!

Carry on! Thanks for the opportunity!

      1. I'm Old-Fashioned

(Makes you appreciate Chris Brubeck even more!)

Posted for loved ones without email etc. as well. This way a friend can play it for them…

Stereogram ‘R’, for Roger Bobo

Roger Bobo is a rare musician whose music is admired in both spheres of classical music and jazz/commercial music. As a gifted educator, orchestral player in the Los Angeles Philharmonic, studio musician and soloist there are few with Bobo’s depth and breadth on any instrument.

From numerous solo albums and international masterclasses to appearing on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson and giving the first solo tuba recital in Carnegie Hall, Roger Boba made beautiful music wherever he went.

“Stereogram R” is also know by a more popular name and set in a Jamaican style. Put your best foot forward or your right foot in! all the best for Thanksgiving 2023! DavidBrubeck.com is thankful for you! (And the Mayflower Compact!)

“Stereogram W” for Bill Bell

Perhaps Dean Martin. Lester Young. That’s about it. Almost NOBODY was cooler than Bill Bell back on the day! Whether as a gifted soloist on tuba or voice, or a member of perhaps the first all-star, low-brass section which included fellow greats: Gordon Pulis and Lewis Van Haney on tenor trombone and Alan Ostrander on bass trombone next to the inimitable Bell in the famed New York Philharmonic.
